1. Commitment to Net Zero
Clean Genesis recognises the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimising the environmental impact of our cleaning operations.
We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions through practical and measurable improvements across our operations, including the products and equipment we use, transportation, energy consumption, waste management and procurement.
We will work towards achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 at the latest, in line with the UK Government's Net Zero commitment and applicable public-sector procurement requirements.
This Carbon Reduction Plan sets out the measures we have implemented, or intend to implement, to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and improve the environmental performance of our business.
2. Our Business and Environmental Impact
Clean Genesis provides professional cleaning services to commercial/Residential/Public-Sector/Industrial customers.
Our principal environmental impacts arise from:
Fuel consumption associated with travel between customer sites;
Electricity and gas used at our operational premises;
The manufacture, transportation and use of cleaning chemicals and consumables;
The use and disposal of plastic products and packaging;
Laundry and cleaning of reusable equipment and uniforms;
Waste generated through our cleaning activities; and
Purchased goods and services associated with our supply chain.
We recognise that, although our direct operational footprint may be relatively modest, our procurement and supply-chain activities can contribute significantly to our overall carbon footprint. We will therefore consider both our direct emissions and relevant indirect emissions when developing and improving our emissions reporting.
3. Carbon Reduction Targets
We will establish and maintain a greenhouse gas emissions baseline using the most recent complete reporting year for which reliable data is available.
Our principal objective is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions progressively while maintaining safe, effective and high-quality cleaning services.
Clean Genesis will:
Establish a reliable carbon emissions baseline;
Measure and report our greenhouse gas emissions annually;
Reduce emissions from company vehicles, unnecessary mileage, employee travel, and fuel consumption;
Improve route planning for cleaning assignments;
Reduce energy consumption at our premises;
Increase the use of environmentally preferable cleaning products where appropriate;
Reduce unnecessary consumption of cleaning products;
Reduce single-use plastics and unnecessary packaging;
Increase recycling and reduce operational waste;
Improve the efficiency and lifespan of cleaning equipment;
Work with suppliers that demonstrate responsible environmental practices;
Consider environmental factors while purchasing goods and services during procurement;
Encourage efficient water use;
Encourage employees to adopt environmentally responsible working practices and
Review progress annually towards Net Zero.
Information and data from the above measures will be collected.
Once sufficient information has been collected, Clean Genesis will calculate its annual greenhouse gas emissions in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) using appropriate and recognised emissions factors.
The baseline will be reviewed annually and updated as more accurate information becomes available.
Reduction pathway
Clean Genesis will establish quantified percentage reduction targets once its baseline emissions have been calculated.
The intended long-term pathway is:
2026: Establish emissions baseline and implement measurement procedures.
2027–2030: Deliver measurable reductions in fuel consumption, travel, waste, packaging and purchased materials.
2030–2040: Continue reducing operational emissions and transition towards lower-emission transport and products where commercially and operationally feasible.
2040–2050: Minimise remaining emissions and address unavoidable residual emissions in accordance with recognised Net Zero principles.
2050 at latest: Achieve Net Zero.
Targets will be reviewed annually and updated where improved emissions data or changes in government procurement requirements make this appropriate.
4. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting
We will calculate our greenhouse gas emissions using recognised greenhouse gas accounting principles and appropriate UK Government emissions factors.
Clean Genesis will consider the three principal categories of greenhouse gas emissions.
Scope 1 – Direct emissions
These include emissions directly generated by sources owned or controlled by the company, such as:
Petrol/diesel consumption;
Vehicle mileage; and
Other directly controlled fuel consumption where applicable.
We aim to reduce Scope 1 emissions by the following ways:
Avoid – eliminate unnecessary fuel use and journeys;
Reduce – make remaining vehicles and equipment more efficient
Replace – move from petrol/diesel/gas to electric or carbon alternatives
Scope 2 – Purchased energy
Clean Genesis operates an office/premises and therefore recognises that purchased electricity represents a Scope 2 emissions source.
We will monitor and record electricity consumption associated with the office/premises using electricity bills, meter readings or other reliable information.
Where the premises use gas or another purchased energy source for heating, this consumption will also be recorded and assessed in accordance with the applicable greenhouse gas reporting methodology.
We will seek to reduce Scope 2 emissions through:
Using LED and other energy-efficient lighting;
Switching off lights when areas are unoccupied;
Switching off computers, monitors and other electrical equipment when not required;
Using energy-efficient office equipment;
Avoiding unnecessary heating and cooling;
Maintaining appropriate heating controls and thermostats;
Monitoring electricity and gas consumption;
Considering renewable electricity tariffs where commercially viable;
Considering renewable energy generation where appropriate; and
Selecting energy-efficient equipment when replacing existing equipment.
We will establish an annual baseline for electricity and other purchased energy consumption and use this information to monitor improvements.
Scope 3 – Other indirect emissions
Where relevant and proportionate to our operations, we will consider emissions associated with:
Purchased cleaning products;
Cleaning equipment and machinery;
Uniforms and work wear;
Packaging;
Employee business travel;
Employee commuting;
Waste generated through operations;
Water and wastewater where relevant;
Transportation and distribution;
Purchased goods and services;
Other relevant supply chain activities.
We aim to reduce our scope 3 emissions by monitoring and prioritising actions with the greatest potential for reduction, and at the same time, improving the quality and completeness of our emissions data over time.
5. Carbon Reduction Measures
5.1 Sustainable Cleaning Products
We will reduce the environmental impact of our cleaning products by:
Prioritising environmentally preferable cleaning chemicals;
Using concentrated products where appropriate to reduce packaging and transportation impacts;
Using products with recognised environmental certifications where commercially and operationally appropriate;
Avoiding unnecessary hazardous or environmentally harmful chemicals;
Following manufacturers' recommended dilution ratios to prevent overuse; and
Working with suppliers to identify lower-impact alternatives.
Staff will be trained to use cleaning products efficiently and safely.
5.2 Reduction of Single-Use Plastics
We will seek to reduce our consumption of single-use plastics by:
Purchasing products with reduced or recyclable packaging;
Using refillable containers where appropriate;
Reusing suitable spray bottles and dispensers;
Avoiding unnecessary disposable items;
Purchasing products in larger or concentrated formats where practical; and
Segregating recyclable packaging for appropriate disposal.
5.3 Cleaning Equipment
We will improve the environmental efficiency of our equipment by:
Selecting energy-efficient vacuum cleaners and electrical equipment;
Considering energy consumption when purchasing new equipment;
Maintaining equipment regularly to maximise efficiency and lifespan;
Repairing equipment where economically and environmentally appropriate rather than replacing it unnecessarily;
Switching off electrical equipment when not required; and
Properly recycling electrical equipment at the end of its useful life.
5.4 Transport, Vehicle and Travel
Travel between customer sites is an important area for emissions reduction.
We will seek to reduce transport emissions by:
Planning cleaning schedules efficiently to minimise unnecessary journeys;
Allocating staff to geographically efficient routes;
Group customer visits geographically where practical;
Encouraging car sharing where practical;
Using public transport where appropriate;
Record vehicle mileage;
Record fuel purchases;
Considering electric or hybrid vehicles when replacing company vehicles;
Avoiding unnecessary engine idling;
Maintaining vehicles properly and regularly to improve fuel efficiency;
Check tyre pressures and vehicle condition;
Encourage efficient driving practices; and
Monitoring fuel consumption where reliable data is available.
We will use collected mileage and fuel data to identify opportunities for reducing transport emissions. Where operationally feasible, we will progressively transition towards lower-emission vehicles.
5.5 Energy Efficiency
At our premises, we will:
Use LED lighting where practical;
Switch off lights and equipment when not required;
Avoid unnecessary heating and cooling;
Use energy-efficient appliances and equipment;
Monitor energy consumption;
Consider renewable electricity tariffs where commercially viable; and
Investigate opportunities for on-site renewable energy where appropriate.
5.6 Water Efficiency
Cleaning operations can require significant water use. We will therefore:
Avoid unnecessary water consumption;
Follow appropriate dilution and cleaning procedures;
Use water-efficient cleaning equipment where practical;
Report and address leaks promptly;
Train employees in efficient water use; and
Consider water consumption when selecting cleaning methods and equipment.
5.7 Waste Management
We will apply the waste hierarchy wherever reasonably practicable:
Prevent → Reduce → Reuse → Recycle → Recover → Dispose
Measures will include:
Reducing unnecessary packaging;
Reusing suitable materials and containers;
Separating recyclable materials;
Recycling cardboard, plastics and other suitable waste;
Ensuring chemical containers are disposed of appropriately;
Preventing contamination of recyclable materials; and
Working with licensed waste contractors where required.
We will monitor waste management arrangements and seek opportunities to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
6. Sustainable Procurement
Environmental considerations will form part of our purchasing decisions.
Where appropriate, we will assess suppliers and products based on:
Environmental certifications;
Recycled or recyclable content;
Packaging reduction;
Product concentration and transport efficiency;
Product durability;
Energy and water efficiency;
End-of-life recyclability;
Supplier environmental policies; and
Availability of relevant carbon emissions information.
We will encourage key suppliers to provide information regarding their own environmental and carbon reduction initiatives.
7. Employee Engagement and Training
Our employees play an important role in delivering our environmental objectives.
We will provide appropriate information and training covering:
Correct use and dilution of cleaning products;
Waste segregation and recycling;
Energy and water efficiency;
Responsible use of cleaning equipment;
Sustainable travel practices;
Reduction of unnecessary consumption; and
The company's environmental objectives.
Environmental responsibilities will be communicated to employees as part of induction and ongoing training.
We will encourage employees to suggest practical measures for reducing waste, energy consumption and emissions.
8. Monitoring and Measurement
We will monitor our environmental performance using appropriate indicators, which may
include:

We will review our performance at least annually and identify additional opportunities for improvement.
9. Responsibility and Governance
Responsibility for implementation of this Carbon Reduction Plan rests with the management of Clean Genesis.
Management will:
Monitor progress against this plan;
Collect and review relevant environmental data;
Maintain appropriate records;
Communicate environmental expectations to employees;
Review purchasing practices;
Identify additional carbon reduction opportunities;
Review progress towards Net Zero; and
Update this Carbon Reduction Plan annually.
Over time, environmental responsibilities and reporting procedures will be reviewed and expanded accordingly.
10. Review and Continuous Improvement
This Carbon Reduction Plan will be reviewed at least annually.
The review will consider:
Changes in the size and activities of the business;
Changes in vehicle use;
Changes in cleaning products and suppliers;
Energy and water consumption;
Waste and recycling performance;
Carbon emissions;
Progress against reduction targets;
Changes in technology; and
Changes in relevant UK environmental and public-sector procurement requirements.
Where appropriate, Clean Genesis will introduce additional measures to achieve further carbon reductions.
11. Declaration
Clean Genesis confirms its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the environmental sustainability of its cleaning services.
We will establish a robust emissions baseline, monitor its environmental performance and implement proportionate carbon reduction measures.
Clean Genesis is committed to progressing towards Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest.
This Carbon Reduction Plan will be reviewed and updated annually.
